South African blushed pears are receiving a boost with selected exporters now sending Celina under a new brand.
South Africa’s pear industry has for many years been searching for a range of blushed pears that will increase its presence in the world’s markets.
The Celina pear, for which South African plant breeder and fruit marketer Stargrow Group has the sole South African rights, is expected to boost this category in future.
Celina, originally developed in Norway in 1997, is in terms of the world pear industry not a new variety. Much like Forrelle, it has been around for some time but is set to play a crucial role in the South African blushed pear range.
Other blushed varieties such Cheeky and improved Rosemary pears will further boost South Africa’s presence in the category.
Celina first arrived in South Africa more than ten years ago. It is still regarded as one of the earliest pears in South Africa.
Leading South African apple and pear exporter Tru-Cape has said that this year will be the first that it is marketing Celina under the international brand QTee.
It is one of three exporters granted marketing rights for QTEE branded Celina pears from South Africa, with the others being Stargrow Fruit Marketing and Core.
“The exclusive Norwegian pear variety Celina, marketed under the renowned QTee trademark, has a promising future in South Africa,” said Tru-Cape’s procurement manager Calla du Toit.
“This innovative cultivar promises exceptional quality, taste, and appearance, positioning it as a standout product in global premium pear markets.”
Celina is a club cultivar that adheres to rigorous quality standards.
“To sell Celina under the QTee brand, producers must meet specific criteria and pay licensing fees to the trademark owner,” he continued.
”With QTee already well-known in Europe and favoured by several major supermarkets, Celina is set to gain immediate recognition in high-end markets.
“We are thrilled with Celina’s performance this year as a variety that can be picked, packed, and shipped,” Du Toit explained. “The meticulous cultivation process, which began with production in Norway, has resulted in a fruit that truly exceeds expectations in flavour and presentation.”
Tru-Cape secured a licence in 2022 to produce and distribute Celina, making it one of only three authorised fruit exporters allowed to market Celina under the QTee brand, reinforcing its status as an exclusive blushed pear.
“Although only a few producers at Ceres Fruit Growers and Two-a-Day currently cultivate Celina, Tru-Cape is committed to expanding cultivation to around 70 hectares,” he confirmed.
While QTee is in high demand in Europe, exports to China have been met with enthusiasm.
The Celina pear’s appearance and ”relatively sweet, melting texture” have earned favourable comparisons to Forelle in the premium fruit category.
“The exclusive nature of Celina, combined with its proven success in key international markets, underscores the company’s commitment to delivering high-quality produce worldwide,” Du Toit concluded.
